Meta accounts can either be permanently deleted or memorialized. A designated Legacy Contact can manage a memorialized profile with restricted access.
You must prepare the following legal and physical documents before contacting the platform's support:
Search for Meta's "Request to Memorialize or Delete a Deceased Person's Account" support form.
Select whether you want to memorialize the account or request deletion.
Submit the deceased person's name, email linked to the account, and profile URL.
Upload a clear scan of the Death Certificate or obituary proof.
Once Meta reviews and approves the request, the account will display a "Remembering" badge (if memorialized) or be deleted permanently.
Memorialized accounts keep the profile active but freeze it so no one can log in, edit past posts, or send new friend requests.
If the user set up a Legacy Contact in settings while alive, that contact can pin a post, update the profile picture, and request account deletion, but cannot read private messages.
